Problem
The installation process relied on technical knowledge and informal guidance, making it difficult for installers to consistently follow best practice on-site. Existing documentation lacked clarity, structure and visual support, increasing the risk of errors, inefficiencies and reliance on verbal instruction.
Approach
I redesigned the installation documentation as a structured, step-by-step learning experience, guiding users through each stage of the process from preparation to troubleshooting.
The content was broken into clear phases, supported by visual aids, safety prompts and practical checkpoints to improve usability in real-world conditions. The design focused on clarity, logical flow and ease of use on-site. This was all completed with the consumer audience in mind, ensuring that installers could confidently use and navigate the resource in their working conditions.
Testimonial
"We recently had the pleasure of working with Chelsea Johnston, who developed a comprehensive roller door installation manual for the Now Buildings team as part of her instructional design practice.
Chelsea created a clear, well-structured, and highly practical guide that walks installers through every stage of the process, from material checks through to troubleshooting. The level of detail, logical flow, and usability of the document is outstanding, making it a genuinely valuable resource for our team in the field.
What impressed us most was Chelsea’s ability to translate a technical, hands-on process into easy-to-follow instructions, complete with visual aids and step-by-step guidance. Her work reflects strong instructional design capability and a real understanding of the end user.
We’re incredibly grateful for the time and effort she contributed and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her for future instructional design work.
